 "Device unreliable and cumbersome" 2009-06-29
By J. Goodson (Chico CA)
Have owned device for one year. Used to track and then dropped tracks using the USB port onto my iMac. Found this process cumbersome and time consuming.

The unit continually freezes and looses all recorded material at least once every time it is used. Have changed hard drives and had repeated attempts to solve the continual issues this product has. Attempted to contact TASCAM. Found them full of superior attitude and derisive to their own customers as well as their own product.

This unit will go into the trash.

TASCAM has now been added to my don't buy list. Buyer beware.

 "Cool, but some drawbacks" 2009-06-09
By Michael D. Bergh (Salem, Or)
Moving from cd-r recorder to the flash recorder has a lot of upside. A 4gb card gives me 6 hours, so I never have to worry about the 80 minute time limit anymore. Yet, the CD recorder allows me the option to CD when needed (ie. a rehearsal that is recorded to CD can be give to the artist afterwards) The setup was fairly straight forward and the menu system is not too bad to navigate. I had it out of the box, setup and recording in 10 minutes. There are two things about this that I don't care for, though. This one is minor, but there is a flashing amber LED that always blinks when recording. It's to indicate wether it's recording on to the flash or CD, but is is so freakin' bright that I had to gaf over it (two layers!). I also have the SS-R1, which is flash only, and it does the same thing. The second is a bigger deal. There is no input volume knob on the face of the recorder and when recording live, it's a big deal. When a group turns out to be much louder than expected, or produces a piece of percussion for one piece, you need to be able to adjust on the fly. These recorders make you navigate thru three pages of menus before you get to the input volume control.

"If you like digital, it's a nice unit" 2009-01-21
By RaptureReady
First off, this unit DOES NOT HAVE a CD drive. It is the wrong description so buyer beware. It has a flash drive capablility. Don't know if a flash card will come with this unit because Tascam ran a special last year (2008) including a 1GB card but that offer expired in December 2008 so you'll have to check that out.

I returned the unit but only because I hate the digital recording sound. But, the unit itself was very nice. Took me a while to actually record something. I read the manual but it just got by me that you had to assign the input to a track to record from it. Anyhow, the sound was clear with no machine noise. Although the headphone jack did not deliver much volume. I guess you'll have to get amplified headphones for better monitoring. Also, I have an acoustic/electric guitar and it sounded pretty bad plugged into the input jack on it's own. I read a lot of reviews where people said they got preamps to improve sound on voice and instruments. I had it for a few days but, once I got the hang of it, I was able to do basic recordings with ease but, like I said, I hate the digital sound on the voice recordings.

 "I second that" 2008-12-30
By intanet (New York)
Amazon seems to have a problem with describing this unit. I have contacted them about it. They removed the 40gb hard drive from the description but they did not remove the CD drive or the effects, neither of which are in this unit (DP-02CF). It's the DP-02 that has the CD drive, Effects and 40GB hard drive. The DP-02 is a more expensive unit.

"Warning: Product description does not match title" 2008-12-19
By Andrew Conway (San Francisco)
The product description is for the DP-02 which is the hard disk version. The product code in the title is for the DP-02CF which is the Compact Flash version which is much cheaper. Don't buy this expecting to get a hard disk.

The MD-350 is the addition to Tascam's line, offering an affordable MD with advanced performance functions. The MD-350 is the best value for live venues, houses of worship, or budget conscious broadcasters.A complete host of audio I/O makes integrating the MD-350 into any system easy. Balanced and unbalanced analog ports are available, as well as digital optical ports. A front panel optical port can be used to connect portable players digitally without crawling behind the machine rack.Pitch control function is available on the MD-350, with a clear on/off switch on the front panel. Plus, a few cueing functions have been added, making sound cues easier for live situations:Auto cue positions the machine to the first audio in a MD track, rather than the actual ID location. This eliminates dead space in the beginning of the track, allowing tighter cues for live shows or on-air environments.Auto ready pauses the machine at each track ID. This is ideal for live environments, allowing the engineer to cue in one track and forget about the machine - it automatically sets itself at the next cue. This is ideal since this also prevents the machine from accidentally rolling into the next cue on the MD.

"A RESPECTED STANDARD OF RECORDING SOPHISTICATION." 2009-11-15
By Scott A. Strother (DALLAS, TX USA)
For it's sheer technical brilliance, Tascam's marvelous MD-350 provides it's fortunate owner complete control of a spectrum of capabilities designed to allow novices, like myself and engineers full reign to explore their talent and creativity. I have recently used mine to convert all of my out of print vinyl to MD and create various track discs for friends. Minidiscs, having been purportedly engineered to have 56 year lifespans, are in my view immune to obselescence, faithfully preserving cherished performances. The controversy surrounding this format's sound quality reflects a subjective bias that has become an all too familiar presence in the world of audio- I at least, haven't any knowledge of the existence of Class A amplification used in studio master recorders (DAT or Analog) and so for me, I'll leave the arguments for sound quality to the technocrats. Well engineered recordings will forever be timeless, and the MD-350 has never gotten in the way of transferring them to MD. MD's portability, ease of use, and technical elegance have made me a true proponent of this excellent new resource... happy listening!

The pedal is perfect for what it's for! Provides a seamless transition from listening to recording. The punch-ins can be virtually unnoticable if you do it right. Just start playing along with the music before punching in, then hit the pedal at your spot. PERFECT. Bonus: works as a kick pedal for my drum machine as well!

 "Pricey, but valuable." 2004-08-26
By Aaron Rubenson (Seattle, WA)
OK, I'll admit it; $30 (the price as I'm writing) seems a bit much for a simple footswitch. Still, I decided to purchase this branded product (vs. a generic substitute) because noise-free switching is critical for punch-in recording. Happily, this unit delivers. I'm now hopping in and out of vocal tracks on my Portastudio 414mkII without a sound. And given the quality of some of my tracks, that's a very good thing...

 "No Gap-less play" 2008-11-20

No seamless play back. If an $200 or less iPod can play seamless tracks back to back. Why can't a Pro gear $700.00 Tascam do it? I wrote Tascam about a software upgrade and didn't even get a response. So I returned it.

 "Just What I Needed" 2008-10-26
By c. bautista (Honolulu, HI)
This recorder does everything it says it does. Well built, easy to use and very good recording sound. The menu system (and buttons) takes some getting use to, but once you start using the buttons, it becomes second nature (although anyone else using it will have to undergo some training). The I/O options are great. The only two blemishes in an otherwise ideal recorder is the low-res LCD (maybe expected in a 1RU) and the rack mounting holes which did not line up in my portable rack (Gator). It's only being held in by two screws, rather than four. Luckily, the unit is light and short (depth).

Update: My mistake on the rack mounting. Lines up perfectly fine.
