 "Good recorder" 2009-12-11
By J. Nguyen
This is a great recorder if you're learning to play electric guitar and are taking lessons. I can record a lesson and then go back to loop certain sections that I want to practice. You can slow down fast sections that you need to work on, and it doesn't mess up the pitch. If you play along with songs, this also allows that easily.

It's also nice if you live in an apartment, because you can just plug into this, use headphones, and it's pretty quiet. The guitar effects are also a fun feature to mess around with, and can make practice a little more entertaining if you're working on boring stuff like scales.

The one bad thing is that for some reason I thought it came with a metal casing, which would be amazing, so was a little disappointed that it was mostly plastic. I also wish you could charge from USB while using it for practice, but it doesn't allow that. You have to get the AC adapter if you want to charge while still using it.

"Tascam Digital Recorder sent incomplete" 2009-09-15
By Richard Chamberlain (Concord, CA USA)
The Tascam GTR1 Portable Digital Recorder was supposed to come with a USB connection cable. It did not have one! According to the manual, you need to charge the battery using the USB cable. I am very disappointed because I did not take my old mini-disc recorder as a back-up. I thought I could charge the GTR1 with the AC adapter unit, but the charge light would only flicker intermittently and the unit never charged enough or held a charge so that I could use it. I was planning on using the recorder for jam sessions at our music camp at the Strawberry Music Festival. It was an extra special Festival because we happened to have one of the Kingston Trio in our camp and the jams were especially good. Unfortunately, the failure to include the USB cable with the unit resulted in no recorded music for me for the entire Festival. I may just send the whole thing back for a refund. Very, very disappointed with this product.

"Amazingly powerful for such a small device..." 2009-05-11
By R. Pearson (Concord, CA USA)
This really is a very useful device for a guitarist, and is a great value. The ability to record and overdub is very useful for the home/hobby musician - you can quickly layer drums, bass, guitar and vocals - I did notice that background hiss increased after each overdub, but not to the point of irritation.

Being able to slow down a song and change the key is incredibly useful when you don't necessarily have the sheet music, or you're looking at fast sections. For example a couple of songs: "It's A Long Way To The Top..." (AC/DC) and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (Green Day) can be tuned down a half or whole step to allow open chords to be played.

I help kids rock bands practice and this device is invaluable in teaching them songs and recording them too.

 "Good Investment" 2009-03-26

Bought mine from Streamline Audio Video via Amazon. Great price, free shipping and came quickly.

Hard to believe it's so hard to find a review for such a great product. It's very intuitive. File management is drag and drop. Hooks up to USB and charges from computer or optional power supply. Lasts a long time on a charge. Holds lots of songs. (read the specs for data) The looping and slow down features are great for practicing. Just push a button right on the front for start and stop points and another to loop. Slowing down without changing the pitch is one button push. Push it again to return to normal speed. I use it mostly for practicing drums since I don't have tabs for that. I have used it with guitar too. I think looping and slow down are the best features. The drum machine effects sound good and have a nice variety of beats but I haven't spent much time with that. Used it to record some ideas with the band live and was amazed at how good the levels were with no mixing or fiddling around. Emailed the song to the rest of the guys and they were impressed with it too - one take - live.

I have also used it to move some cassette tapes to MP3 format and it works fantastic for that too. A nice bonus. I bought the optional power supply too for around $20 - it is high quality.

I love this thing. My playing has improved quite a bit since it's arrival.

Hope this helps you as I could find very little info when I was looking.
