 "Excellent value, professional quality." 2010-02-26
By L. Claassen
I am a former professional touring and recording musician. I've worked in a number of high caliber studios and now have a one-man home studio for producing original material to make CDs for friends and family. I started with the Yamaha AW16G, the precursor to the 1600, and have had the 1600 for several years. I can't say enough about this workstation. I used to have a rack full of peripherals (compressor/limiter, effects, EQ, etc.) for my half inch tape recorder, but now the patch bay is the only module I need to use. The 1600 comes with everything mentioned plus parametric EQ, dynamics and effects for each channel. It has a built in CD burner/player, and USB port for uploading to computer via wave files. The mixdown library even eliminates the need for my aural exciter. The architecture is fairly intuitive and the results are astounding, radio-play quality recordings with a little experience. The only thing on my wish list is for more playback effects per channel (currently only two) but this has not been a problem since I add many effects during the recording process. At anything less than $1000, this unit is well worth the price.

 "The Fostex FR2LE" 2009-10-29
By Thomas A. Tellesbo (Phoenix, Az)

I am not an audiophile...I am not a professional in the sound industry. That being said, I spent innumerable hours researching portable digital recorders and found that I was continually routed to the same three manufacturers. More research, and (of course) budget constraints led me to the easy decision to purchase the FR2LE. The sound recorded, to my untrained ear and the use of relatively inexpensive dynamic microphones, provides so much more than I am capable of asking of it at the present time...the menus seem intuitive, controls all simply placed, retrieval of recorded material to PC is quick and painless, the unit is small and light fitting very easily and handily in a smallish shoulder bag.

I have much to learn and am pleased that I chose this machine to facilitate that process.

 "Great field recorder" 2009-06-30
By Chauncey Gardiner
I use my "fertooli" to record live music (with an external pair of microphones). It's well built and hasn't malfunctioned since I've owned it (1 year, purchased used). Although you should wait a second before hitting buttons/turning off AFTER recording, since I got it to freeze trying to turn it off immediately after stopping a recording.

My preamp is modded by the Oade Bros, but the stock one is considered to be of good quality. Potential buyers should determine if they need and prefer all the features (24 bit, built-in mics (which I haven't used and can't comment on), CF memory card storage). There are a few other great all-in-one type field recorders. If FR2LE specs suit your needs, then feel confident that these are well built. Also, look at the dimensions and weight before purchasing. It's not quite "hand-held."

If you don't think you'll utilize most of the FR2LE features, search for alternative (and cheaper) recorders that offer the features you need without extras you don't. That's my advice. The way people use these recorders is broad (live music, studio music, live speech, nature, with internal/external mics, needing various recording quality), so it's hard to "recommend" it to someone without knowing what they'll use it for.

It's a great product and I love mine.

"Best quality-cost in its class" 2008-12-31
By Nathan Moody (San Francisco, CA)
I'm a bit of a phonographer; I've been field recording for a few years now, using everything from laptops to DAT to MiniDisc and, most recently, a Zoom H2. While the H2 is my go-to, always-in-the-bag recorder, its mic preamp is so noisy as to be useless for more exacting recording using external microphones. But I'm a hobbyist field recordist, musician, and sound designer, so I couldn't spend huge sums on a more serious recorder.

Enter the Fostex FR2-LE. Its preamps are solid, and the audio quality is far and away the best for its price range...truly impressive for such a low-cost device. Lots of thought went into this unit, all the way down to using either AA batteries or inexpensive rechargeable RC/toy vehicle battery packs, the latter lasting 4-8 hours. Nice! It's small enough that it can fit into a fanny pack or small satchel (I modified a surplus army first-aid shoulder bag so I could route the cables out to the side)...it's about the size of a large-format hardbound novel.

Sure, the case feels plasticky and wouldn't withstand a drop onto concrete. The control layout is diffuse, and the side (well, top, when used in the bag) gain LED's are hard to see in bright daylight. But such are the compromises for bringing the cost of this unit down. The only real "no-excuse-for-it" flaw is its noisy headphone amp...rest assured, though, that the audio being recorded is insanely low-noise and clean.

I use this unit primarily for collecting samples for sound design and musical projects, using mics that include shotgun, contact, large-diaphragm condensers, and dynamic. This is a serious, just-shy-of-pro tool that can handle everything but harsh environments and timecode-based video sync. I've been supremely happy with it from a value standpoint, and (of course) the clarity and presence of the final audio result.

By Gregory W. Butler (Kansas)
The Boss Br1600 is a outstanding recorder. Lots of Tech built into this unit. If your a person who has a hard time understanding Tec imformation step by step than you need to get something more simple. The manual is hard to read. But if you have had experience with other recorders than iam sure you will find this unit outstanding. Maybe you should download the manual first before buying the unit.Amazon should put more Tec imformation when they try to sell the BR1600 16 track recorder. Make sure that the power adapter which is a roland comes with the unit if not thats $44.85cents more out of your pocket. I first bought this in 2005 and have had no problems and no tec support.

 "Boss BR900CD Excelent product" 2009-12-09
By Hector P. Ayala Garcia (Mexico)
This product is great and a dream for AMATEUR musicians who record alone, that is, I do not have so much time to practice with a band and record so this product gives the chance to integrate drums, bass simulators and a lot of effects.

Not that easy to use if you have never record before but for sure reading the manual/ watching tutorials is a great help to explode everything it has

I am very happy with it, very recomendable

"great when you figure it out!" 2009-03-23
By lamar (new orleans)
if your not good w electronics, this br900 is going to take you some time, it took me way to long. once you get the basics down, do not hesitate to call thier 1800 help line, the guys are kinda pricks, but they tell you what you need to know.

ups to the br900, as many inputs as they could fit, 1/4, xlr, midi out, usb, rca line out and line in(line in is crucial when using effects processors such as kaoss, or even external mixers(djs).

the built in effects sound good, they have three banks, guitar, mic, and line, ive used them all,

and the price has went way down, i paid 699 bout two years ago.

some do not like that it records to compact flash, but they are so cheap now that should not be a problem.

the headache for me was not recording, it was mastering and burning the disc, but w sum help from the guys at boss, they talked me through it, and i burn a disc everytime i use it, if you got music in you that you want to record, this is an affordable, quick way to do it,

 "Solid and simple" 2007-11-21
By John F. Hutton (Colorado, US)
I purchased this unit to do some recording (mainly voice, piano, and ensemble). While it took many more $$ to get the cables and microphones, this is now the foundation of a solid solution.

It is easy to use (although not painless) and the manual is not the greatest. I'm sure there are many more features that I just don't use. Several features seem targeted at more "rock" than the classical I do.

It hooks to the computer without to much trouble. It also does a reasonable job cutting tracks to CD on its own (but it is slow since most of the mixing and burning is in real (i.e. x1 time).

I have one outing where I recorded an entire concert, but I have yet to try and mix this down to individual tracks (and wonder if I will need some better software than Nero).

All together, this is a solid unit for a reasonable price.

 "In A Word...AWESOME!" 2010-01-07
By A. Billings (Memphis, TN United States)
I purchased this item about a year ago. It remained in the box until May, when I had a friend unpack it and check it out for me. We now use it on a regular basis...both as a mixer and to record our meetings to an iPod.

I had considered getting the Belkin TuneStudio Portable Digital Multitrack Recorder, but opted for the Alesis because it has 8 rather than 4 inputs. Little did I know that we would be able to effectively turn those 8 inputs into 16! And the degree of control over each individual input is phenomenal.

The size makes the Alesis a little "less portable" than what I had originally wanted, but that has been a total non-issue for us. The extra capacity makes this a wonderful choice.

I highly recommend this product!
